In the first week of our stay in Surinam the Xplore participants followed a "training period" at the Kangoeroeschool in Paramaribo. During this training period the Xplorers were able to prepare themselves and try out methods and different approaches for the "Leri for Life" workshops Communication and Fundraising to be given in Kajapatie and Lespantie. The Kangoeroe school has also been the training centre for "Leri for Life". A couple of ladies working with "Leri for Life" have followed a training period regarding the parent/child activities at the Kangoeroeschool. In the inland of Surinam the Xplorers will work with the adults, at the Kangoeroe school they worked with the children of classes 2 and 3.
We could not have picked a better week to work with the children at the Kangoeroe school. The theme that week turned out to be "the Newspaper". So we were dealing with all future journalists. On 29 June a Family Day was to be organized around the celebration of Keti Koti. The fundraising was planned to collect money for the school yard. The Xplorers made a special newspaper therefore called "de Kangoeroekrant" ("the Kangooroo Newspaper").
The "Kangoeroekrant" will show what the children like about their school, what they expect of Keti Koti and which things they would like to have in their playground. Angracia, Laura and Linda helped the group with the newspaper, they were writing and drawing, and a real Editorial Office was installed. Next to the newspaper Alieke, Kim and Soelami made a promotional film with the children. First of all the subjects of the film were discussed and the kids worked on their presentation and interview techniques. Divided into three film crews, the children continued to present the Kangoeroeschool, told all about Keti Koti and what they would like to buy for the schoolyard with the collected money. The films are in Dutch and do not have English subtitles, nevertheless we hope you enjoy the images.
