The children in JawJaw are happy to have a new library in their village. Most books are written in Dutch, there are not so many books translated or written in Sranang tongo or the Saramaccan language. Dutch is the 'official' language of Surinam and the language the children learn at school. Erna Hulsenboom hopes the children in JawJaw will get fond of reading.

Kipora is a young girl who lives in the inland of Surinam. She lives in JawJaw. Her parents live in the capital city, Paramaribo. In the inland from Surinam daily life is different from the life in Paramaribo. This short movie is a portret of Kipora's life in JawJaw.

Lespantie, playingIt is midday when Anduele approaches me with the question “Can I use some of your vinegar? I want to make cucumbers with pepper in vinegar”. I am sitting in the cooking hut of his family which we can use to prepare our meals during our stay at Lespantie I. In the ‘kitchen’ it is dark and smoky. A few days ago Anduele assisted me to get a small fire. Small enough not to burn the kitchen down, warm enough to prepare our meal. Anduele is a big help to us.

“It is an insult to Allah when one does this!”

the-birthdayCan you be a transsexual in an Islamic country? The leading male in the movie The Birthday feels like he really is a woman. He lives in Iran, a country where law is based on the Koran. The leading character wants to have a sex change-surgery and is followed by a film crew before, during and after his operation. Transsexuals are not afraid of prosecution in Iran. The Koran does not mention transsexuality thus one assumes that it is not forbidden. But a surgery like that has many consequences in an Islamic society. Not every Muslim believes that transsexuality should be tolerated.

The same in Surinam. In our country most Muslims are from the Javanese or Hindustan community. However there are also Palestinians and Jordanians living in our country. Like the Lebanese they settled here years ago from the Middle East. The Birthday caused quite a stir in a Surinam-Palestine family, who read an article on the movie in the Back Lot catalogue.
